Music

It’s official, live music makes you happier

Attending music events has been linked to a higher personal sense of wellbeing, according to a new study.

Researchers at Victoria’s Deakin University have found that ‘engaging with music by dancing or attending musical events was associated with higher SWB (Subjective wellbeing) than for those who did not engage with music in these forms’.

Adding, “The findings also emphasised the important role of engaging with music in the company of others with regard to SWB, highlighting an interpersonal feature of music.”

The charmingly titled If You’re Happy and You Know It: Music Engagement and Subjective Wellbeing surveyed 1,000 Australians to provide an overview of the general relationship between music and SWB.

“The insight gained from these findings can be used to inform future interventions and to better understand how music is involved in emotional regulation,” the report states.

So if you’re struggling to justify your next gig, perhaps pinning this study to your fridge will do the trick.
