Review: Creeper truly deliver at London’s Electric Ballroom

Creeper deliver a powerhouse performance at London’s Electric Ballroom.

Creeper have caused a stir with the recent release of their eagerly anticipated Eternity, In Your Arms debut album. It’s the culmination of years of groundwork; not least some exceptional EPs and a notably creative marketing campaign that saw the band unravel into a brilliantly staged missing-person mystery.

Fortunately located by their dedicated fan base, tonight is something of a religious experience for many attending fans. Their backdrop of neon crucifixes heightens the comparison, although admittedly they are more indicative of the band’s goth influence.

Dressed all in black, vocalist Will Gould arrives on stage to a heroes welcome. His modest presence is rapidly elevated by his dark vocal tones, sitting confidently between 80s new wave and My Chemical Romance’s Gerard Way. His voice never falters, hauntingly delicate yet immensely powerful.

It’s an accolade he shares with co-vocalist Hannah Greenwood, who complements with her more tender tones. Yet come Crickets, her stripped back solo vocal performance, she’s provided the opportunity to showcase her true vocal ability. The cracks sting with heartbreak, a tone matched as Gould serenades with the almighty Misery.

The band addresses the crowd, declaring the evening an experience above and beyond a standard gig. Their positive mantra shines especially bright as they break into the Queen-esque I Choose To Live. Both prove just how much tonight’s crowd fully identifies with Creeper. And that is enough to make their bold declaration true. There are indeed few gigs as powerful and meaningful as this.

Creeper will be playing on the Main Stage at Download Festival this year. Tickets are available now through Ticketmaster.co.uk.
