Review: Lonely The Brave impress at Islington Assembly Hall

English alt-rock band Lonely The Brave rocked Islington Assembly Hall on 24 November.

The band released the deluxe edition of their debut album The Day’s War earlier this year and supported Twin Atlantic on their UK tour in May. And that’s just the first half of a massive 2015 for the Cambridge five-piece. Ahead of their 9-date UK tour in November, Lonely The Brave played the massive main stage at Reading and Leeds festival, sharing the same stage with the legendary Libertines, The Gaslight Anthem, Jamie T and more.

Tonight’s show at Islington’s Assembly Hall marks the bands’ penultimate gig on their autumn UK tour, taking their fan base from Cambridge to the entire country with support from Brighton-based, progressive post-hardcore quartet, Black Peaks.

The headline set kicks off with the intense mid-temp King Of The Mountain. The band’s sound is melodic, and lead singer David Jakes’ vocals are almost unearthly and a true calling card for the band. And the crowd seems instantly taken into this atmosphere of enchanting melodies and well-worded lyrics.

Lonely The Brave also treat us to three new songs off the deluxe re-release of their debut – Science, River River and Control sound through the speakers. And as if that isn’t treat enough, we get to hear two freshly recorded songs from the upcoming second album. Dust and Bones was only recorded a month ago, along with Radar and Diamond Days. If this is the teaser of what’s to come, we can only say: bring it on, boys!

The venue seems almost too small for the band’s big sound, and equally matched ambitions. Lonely The Brave are undeniably a band to watch closely. They’re not just another British rock band; their stadium-ready rockers with a stage presence to take them all the way to the top.
