Review: Ice meets clubbing at SKATE at Somerset House
‘Tis the season for parties and ice skating, well how about the two combined? We paid a visit to one of SKATE at Somerset House’s famous club nights on Friday 16 December.
This was a special evening to celebrate the life of the Bristol legend DJ Derek who passed away earlier this year having gone missing in 2015. The club night was named accordingly under the world famous title of Sweet Memory Sounds, which he created and also released an album and documentary under.
If you don’t know DJ Derek and Sweet Memory Sounds, he was a local celebrity in Bristol having played reggae, ska, dancehall and R&B in and around the city for over 50 years. He was extremely loved by everyone because of his knowledge of music, impeccable timing and his ability to bring people together regardless of background.
Even though the evening was spent on ice, as expected the music was from a more tropical place and that really helped with the cold. The rhythm of ska, reggae and dancehall is surprisingly suited for those less talented at ice skating as well.
The SKATE at Somerset House club nights have been a staple of the ice rink, running every week with a different theme for each one. There are four:
