Sir Chris Hoy and Mark Cavendish launch Six Day London
Sir Chris Hoy and Mark Cavendish hosted an exciting launch event in the capital today, celebrating the return of Six Day racing to London.
The new, world-class cycling event will take place at Lee Valley VeloPark, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, between 18 – 23 October.
It’s been a whopping 35 years since Six Day racing was held in the UK, with this event marking the homecoming and reboot of the popular sport.
“We’re incredibly proud of this history and heritage,” said Mark Darbon, CEO of Madison Sports Group, at the official press conference today. “We intend to showcase track cycling in its best light and bring new fans into the sport.”
Mark Cavendish also recalled his first experiences of the sport, adding his enthusiasm for its return: “I’m super excited that there’s this plan to bring more Six Day racing back.”
So what do you need to know?
Six Day London will see teams of two riders compete in multiple races, including sprint, elimination, derny and time trial. As well as trying to take laps, teams accumulate points in each discipline. The winners will be the team with the overall lead at the end.
“The difference between Olympics and Championships, and Six Day is that there’s no pressure or medals at stake,” explained Sir Chris Hoy. “It’s a real showcase for skill.”
