Five sporting events we’re looking forward to in 2014
NFL
2014 is set to be a groundbreaking year for the NFL International Series with three regular season games being played at Wembley Stadium, NFL’s international home in the UK. See two fan favourites clash as the Oakland Raiders take on the Miami Dolphins on 28 September. Then don’t miss fast-paced action as the Atlanta Falcons play host to the Detroit Lions on 26 October. 9 November will see the Jacksonville Jaguars (who last year reached a deal to play regular season games in London until 2016) go head-to-head with the Dallas Cowboys in this highly sought-after game. Get ready, America’s biggest sporting action is heading your way.
Six Nations
Last year Wales were the victors of the Six Nations and retained the championship title for the first time since 1979. Come March they’ll surely be looking to make it a hat trick, while England will be looking for revenge after suffering their heaviest defeat in years to the champions on the final match day. Once again joining England and Wales in the Six Nations tournament are France, Ireland, Scotland and Italy. Whether you’re a rugby fan, new or old, see the stadia come alive with fans cheering on each home nation competing for the title.
The Open Championship
Returning to Royal Liverpool this July, top golfers from around the world will compete for the most coveted trophy in the game, the Claret Jug. The last time the Open came to Hoylake was 2006 and Tiger Woods was victorious. In 2014, Phil Mickelson will return to defend his title in golf’s oldest Major, and one of the biggest sporting highlights of 2014.
Aviva Premiership Final
Kick-off May with the crème de la crème of rugger action as the AVIVA Premiership Rugby Final returns to Twickers. After nine trying months and 135 games, it all comes down to this very match; where the union’s top teams will fight for the right to be crowned champion. This day promises to be electrifying, packed with passion, adrenaline and top class rugby action.
Commonwealth Games
17 sports, 14 venues, 70 nations and 11 days!
From 23 July to 3 August, the world will be watching Glasgow as it plays host to the XX Commonwealth Games, the largest sporting event ever to be hosted by our neighbour, Scotland.
