5 life lessons you learn after seeing Wicked on the West End

There’s no wonder Wicked remains one of the best-loved shows on the West End. Attracting audiences since its arrival in 2006, the Joe Mantello production leaves theatre-goers with more than one life lesson to cherish.

Here, we round up five of our favouritie things to take away from the heart-warming show…

1. Defying gravity is one of the most spirit-boosting songs on the West End

There’s certainly some stiff competition for most spine-tingling song on the West End, but as Elphaba (the Wicked Witch of the West) soars to the sky at the track’s triumphant finalé, you feel like you can shoot to the moon right by her side.

2. Never judge a book by its cover

Sure, it’s easy to get a grasp on what witches Elphaba – painted green for the entirety of the show – and Glinda – superficial and pristine to onlookers – are all about. But nothing is without its sympathetic twists and turns as the story really unravels.

3. West End debuts don’t come much bigger

Jennifer DiNoia makes her West End and UK debut as Elphaba in the latest production, starring alongside Savannah Stevenson as Glinda. No stranger to the role, DiNoia has played the Wicked Witch of the West in four countries, with six different companies. Emma Hatton – whose credits include We Will Rock You, and Dreamboats and Petticoats – will take over the role of Elphaba from 2 February.

4. There are two sides to every story

Thought you knew everything there was to know about the Wicked Witch of the West? Think again. Forming a prequel to the Wizard of Oz, Wicked wows audiences with the untold story of the iconic green-faced character.

5. Friendships can be a little complicated

Equal parts surprising and heart-warming, the unlikely friendship between Glinda and Elphaba is what has had West End audiences gripped for eight years and counting.
