Our guide to This House at the Garrick Theatre

This House is now open in London’s West End, so we’ve done the work for you to find out everything you need to know about the timely production.

First things first, what’s it all about?
We aren’t using the term “timely” lightly. This House describes itself as a “moving and often amusing insight into the workings of British politics.” Set in 1974, the production focusses on the role of the Whips, responsible for influencing the policy makers in their political party. The plot goes on to say: “In an era of chaos, both hilarious and shocking, fist fights break out in the parliamentary bars, high-stake tricks and games are played, while sick or dying MPs are carried through the lobby to register their crucial votes as the government hangs by a thread.”

What are the critics saying?
It’s very high praise across the board. The key publications and reviewers have showered This House with five stars, calling it “magnificently sharp and witty” (Evening Standard) and “a stroke of genius” (The Times).

All agree on its current relevance. The Guardian describes it as “a thrilling play that both relives history and transcends it”, with WhatsOnStage labelling it a “remarkable achievement for all concerned.”

This House has also received praise for its cast and direction. The Daily Telegraph notes its “excellent ensemble”, with the Evening Standard adding, “there has simply been no better direction than this in 2016.”

Where and when is it showing?
This House is open now at the Garrick Theatre in London’s West End, and runs until the 25 February 2017. It’s located on Charing Cross Road in the City of Westminster. For anybody driving, the postcode is WC2H 0HH.

How do you get there?
As ever, drivers can park in any nearby Q-Park and save 50% once validated at the theatre box office.

For those not willing, interested or able to drive around the centre of London, the Garrick Theatre is close to Underground stations Leicester Square (Northern, Piccadilly), Charing Cross (Northern, Bakerloo), and Embankment (District, Circle).

There’s loads of buses that pass through too, namely the 3, 6, 9, 12, 13, 15, 24, 29 and 30.

What can you get up to before and after the show?
There’s always plenty of places to eat and drink in the West End. There’s a handful of the usual chain restaurants nearby, including Prezzo, Pizza Express and Cafe Rouge. There’s also the occasional pub grub available, and a healthy dose of Italian restaurants. For those looking for something a little special, Lotus is just up the road. The contemporary Indian restaurant is ranked at No.94 on Trip Advisor across the whole of London.
