Imelda Staunton will star in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? when it returns to London next year

Following her Olivier Award-winning turn in the impeccable Gypsy last year, Staunton will play the role of Martha in this new production.

Edward Albee, the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright of the show, who died earlier this month, is probably best known for this seminal classic – which reached critical acclaim thanks in part to the 13-times, Academy Award-nominated movie starring screen legends Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton.

The new production will be directed by James Macdonald (The Father) and will run at the Harold Pinter Theatre from 22 February to 27 May.

Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? tells the story of Martha and George, who, in the early hours of the morning on the campus of an American college, entertain new professor, Nick, and his wife, Honey, for some after-party drinks. As the alcohol flows and dawn approaches, the young couple are drawn into George and Martha’s toxic games until the evening reaches its climax in a moment of devastating truth-telling.

Staunton will be joined by Game of Thrones star Conleth Hill as George, with further casting to be announced.
