Ragtime lives again with a new West End production set to open in October
Get ready for a rousing revival of the multiple Tony Award-winning musical Ragtime. A brand new production is coming to Charing Cross Theatre in October for a nine-week run.
Based on the EL Doctorow novel of the same name, Ragtime tells the story of three characters from very different backgrounds – a musician in Harlem, a middle-class mother in New Rochelle and a Jewish immigrant. They all seek better futures for themselves and their families in New York City amid the social upheaval of early 20th century America. Their fictional lives not only become entwined with each other, but also with historical figures like Harry Houdini, Booker T Washington, JP Morgan and Henry Ford.
Veteran actors Earl Carpenter and Anita Louise Combe will lead the cast in bringing Ragtime to life. Carpenter starred both in the West End and on Broadway as The Phantom in The Phantom of the Opera and as Javert in Les Misérables, while Combe recently played Grizabella in the UK tour of Cats and Tessie Tura in Gypsy at the Savoy Theatre.
Ragtime led the 1998 Tony Awards with 12 nominations. Among its four wins was Best Original Score, and we can hardly wait to have our heartstrings plucked by its many memorable musical numbers including the title song and the iconic Wheels of a Dream.
