Review: Dane Baptiste @ Edinburgh Festival Fringe

The comedian brings G.O.D. to the Scottish capital.

Dane Baptiste’s new show at the Fringe, modestly named G.O.D. (Gold. Oil. Drugs.), will have you praying for more. Discussing what Baptiste suggests are the three pillars to modern society, he hilariously mocks our misguided worship of all things umbrellaed under the capitalist holy trinity.

Don’t worry, the show isn’t as heavy as the subject matter may sound. Baptiste keeps the audience laughing not only with his preaching but also with comic tangents, such as acting out a 90 second summary of 50 Shades of Grey or mansplaining why the lyrics and meaning to TLC’s No Scrubs have made it the anthem for all gold diggers.

His calm and unassuming stage manner provides the perfect contradiction to his sharp and poignant wit, and G.O.D. (Gold. Oil. Drugs.) is the perfect example of Baptiste’s abilities as a stand-up comedian.

Dane Baptiste performs G.O.D. (Gold. Oil. Drugs.) at Edinburgh Fringe until 27 August. He performs at Pleasance Courtyard at 21:00 and also 23:15 on 25 & 26 August.
