Explosive punk rock, head-banging mullets – courtesy of frontwoman Amy Taylor – and ferocious energy, Amyl and The Sniffers have it covered.

Their chaotic and energetic live shows were always going to be a tough act to follow, but the fierce and thrilling debut from Taylor and co. pulls at the strings of 70’s ACDC, The Cramps, Motorhead and more, making for the wildest party soundtrack.

With their twist on Aussie bogan-rock, the Melbourne punk outfit fire through 11 songs in under 30 minutes, it’s hard-and-fast in every sense and welcomes a headfirst dive into the pit.

Released through Rough Trade, and produced by Ross Orton (Arctic Monkeys, M.I.A and more), their eponymous debut is a clean hit dominated by sharp lyrics, thundering drums, hard-hitting riffs, and no time for messing about.

Control highlights Amy’s bravado with the lyrics “I like control… I’m in control” flanked by jangling hooks, high-pitched screams, and Mick Jagger-esque “huhs”.

Heavy bass and Amy’s Aussie twang permeate the instant punk classic, Got You; a modern tale of new love, which was released as a single in April. Melodic fuzzy riffs and bluntly delivered lyrics make Gacked On Anger a stand-out, while Shake Ya is both familiar and refreshing.

Some Mutts (Can’t Be Muzzled) is exceptional, brimming with a ferocious energy amidst progressive beats, throwing in plenty of ‘Woofs’ for fun. The rage-induced Monsoon Rock might describe stormy weather, but easily becomes the perfect soundtrack to a muddy festival mosh-pit.

Their anticipated debut follows their two previous EPs, and a seemingly never-ending tour run, which has seen them amass a huge following in the UK, Europe and the US.

It’s undeniably hard to bottle the wild chaos and unpredictable energy of their live shows, but their self-titled effort is a huge success. It’s fun and exciting, and while it follows a template of punk rock past, their take on the revival is fresh and invigorating.
