We catch up with the band's Stéfane Mellino ahead of their 30th Anniversary shows.
Elton John has announced two massive outdoors shows for June 2019, marking the first UK dates of his recently revealed Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour.
The musical legend will take to The 1st Central County Ground in Hove on Sunday 9 June 2019, and Cardiff City Stadium on Saturday 15 June 2019. The latter has been confirmed as Elton’s last ever show in Wales.
Elton John first played the home of Sussex Cricket twelve years ago, with next year’s headline performance set to be his third at the venue. The Cardiff date marks his tenth show in the capital, and his fourteenth in the country. He first took to Cardiff for two nights at the Capitol Theatre in 1976.
The news comes as Elton prepares to kick off his eagerly anticipated Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour in Pennsylvania. The star confirmed his final run of live dates back in January at Gotham Hall in New York.
“I want to thank my extraordinary fans for their overwhelming support throughout my career and especially their interest in being there to celebrate my final Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour,” said Elton John. “I am so excited for the start of the tour and can’t wait to see everybody on the road.”
Speaking of the UK shows he adds: “I am very happy to announce the launch of my UK Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour with concerts in Hove and Cardiff. The audiences in the South Coast and Wales have always been some of the most welcoming and exciting I have played in front of over the past forty-two years and the band and I are so excited to say goodbye in the most fantastic way. It’s going to be amazing!”
The full tour will consist of more than 300 shows across five continents, set to reach its end in 2021.
As one of the top selling solo artists of all time, Elton has 38 gold records to his name, with over 50 Top 40 hits. He has sold more than 300 million records worldwide and holds the record for the biggest-selling single of all time, selling over 33 million copies of Candle In The Wind 1997.
He released his debut solo album in 1969, celebrating mainstream success the following year with his sophomore self-titled record.
His many hits, taking him across six decades, include Your Song, Tiny Dancer, I’m Still Standing, Sacrifice, Can You Feel The Love Tonight, Electricity and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.
As well as dominating the charts, Elton John has written music for stage and screen, and continues to be a key activist in the fight against HIV/AIDS. He established the leading non-profit HIV/AIDS organisation Elton John AIDS Foundation, raising over $400 million to date.
