Last weekend, global superstars from the worlds of pop, urban and electronic music descended on Hylands Park in Chelmsford and Weston Park in Staffordshire for the annual V Festival party. Taking place across the 19 – 20 August 2017, the festival hosted headliners Pink and Jay-Z, as well as huge performances from Stormzy, Jason Derulo, Craig David and many more.

The Saturday at Hylands Park also welcomed the return by festival veterans Madness who, sandwiched between James Arthur and George Ezra, brought their iconic ska to the masses. The sun shone throughout the day, with pop maestros The Vamps delivering a particularly energetic rendition of The Killers’ hit Mr Brightside. On the MTV Stage, Rudimental were joined by Madness frontman Suggs (who revealed to us that he’s also been in the studio with the producers), while Sean Paul offered a masterclass in dancehall brilliance.

It was the final double of Craig David and Pink that truly stole the show. Craig, armed with a host of huge hits and his TS5 party machine, brought the entire crowd to their feet, suitably warmed up for a heart-stopping entrance by Pink, who arrived to the festival’s Supervene Stage dangling precariously from a crane. Free-falling to the stage, it marked the start of a barrage of anthems, including classics such as Just Like A Pill and a stripped back rendition of Don’t Let Me Get Me, featuring British singer-songwriter James Gillespie. “I don’t perform it because I don’t like it,” she said of the track, before revealing that Gillespie had added a breath of fresh air to the song. My the time Pink was hoisted up, back into the air on a series of wires, belting out her liberating Rockstar, she’d cemented her place as the one of the best in pop.

Sunday saw hip-hop entrepreneur Jay-Z take to the main stage, reportedly arriving by helicopter before taking his place in front of a giant silver balloon dog. He launched into material from his most recent 4:44 record, with appearances by classics such as Empire State Of Mind and 99 Problems.

Ellie Goulding offered a similarly mesmerising performance, showcasing the quality of her voice on tracks such as the spine-tingling Army and fan favourite Love Me Like You Do. Stormzy pulled a huge crowd, cementing his title as the current king of grime, while Jason Derulo delivered an absolutely brilliant mid-afternoon set, bringing perhaps the festival’s biggest party with closer Want To Want Me.

With a hearty mix of people camping, attending for a day, or travelling to and forth from V Festival, the event welcomed a huge variety of fans, both young and old. With the line-up boasting the best from across the musical spectrum, as well as huge names from the world of comedy, it’s no surprise that tickets flew out the door.

There were also surprise visits by the cast of reality TV shows The Only Way Is Essex, Made In Chelsea and the ever-popular Love Island. We’re still recovering from the cheers as Stormzy announced Chris Hughes and Kem Cetinay were standing side of stage. Queue their faces on the main stage’s screens, and huge cheers.
