Janelle Monáe announces huge London show

She'll take to SSE Arena Wembley on 2 July 2019.

Following acclaimed headline dates earlier in 2018, Janelle Monáe has announced a return to the UK for a special headline show at London’s SSE Arena Wembley on 2 July 2019.

The date continues her celebration of Dirty Computer, her powerful fourth studio album released in April of this year.

The album spawned the absolutely huge Make Me Feel, as well as Django Jane and PYNK.

Born in Kansas City, Monáe had always dreamt of becoming a singer. She moved to New York City to pursue her dreams and studied drama at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy.

In 2001, she moved to Atlanta, Georgia and this was the start of her musical career. During her time in Atlanta, she met OutKast’s Big Boi, and came up with the concept of Wondaland Arts Society.

Monáe released her first EP in 2003 called The Audition. The EP demonstrates her vocal talent and skill, and with only 400 copies released, it has now become a valuable collector’s item.

The singer released her first solo full-length album, Metropolis, in 2005, and scored a Grammy Award nomination for Best Urban/Alternative Performance for her single Many Moons.

She then went on to release The ArchAndroid in 2010 and The Electric Lady in 2013.

In 2015, Monáe announced that with Epic Records, she’d created her own independent label, Wondaland Arts Society, an idea she had all those years ago. Now known as Wondaland Records, this made her one of the few African-American women in the industry who run their own record label.

From her record label, she released the EP Wondaland Presents: The Eephus which featured artists signed to the label including St. Beauty, Roman GianArthur, Jidenna, Deep Cotton and Monáe herself. The album peaked at No.5 on the US Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Album chart.

Her talent was not only recognised by the music industry but also Harvard University. She was the recipient of the Harvard College Women’s Center Award for Achievement in Arts and Media as well as becoming the 2014 Women of the Year by Harvard College Black Men’s Forum where they celebrate the achievement of black women at an annual gala.

As well as music, you can also find Monáe trying her hand at acting. She made her debut on the big screen in the critically acclaimed film Moonlight. She also starred in Hidden Figures. Both of these films were nominated for several Academy Awards including the big Best Picture award. Moonlight was the first LGBTQ+ film as well as the first film with a predominately black cast to win the prestigious award.

In an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Monáe said that she identifies herself as bisexual and pansexual.
