Kraftwerk announced as first bluedot 2019 headliner

The electronic pioneers will close the main Lovell stage on Saturday night.

The organisers of bluedot have today confirmed their first headliner of 2019’s edition of the festival will be the legendary Kraftwerk.

The award-winning science and culture festival returns to Chesire’s iconic Jodrell Bank Observatory from 18 – 21 July 2019.

Now in its fourth year, the groundbreaking festival has previously seen headline performances from The Chemical Brothers, Pixies, The Flaming Lips, Underworld and Jean-Michel Jarre, as well as talks from high-profile individuals such as Brian Cox, Richard Dawkins, Alice Roberts and Dallas Campbell.

Formed in Dusseldorf, Germany in 1970, Kraftwerk are pioneers of electronic music and are widely credited as being one of the first acts to popularise the genre. The band have released 10 studio albums so far, in a career spanning nearly five decades. Their most commercially successful album is the 1974 release Autobahn. The record, which charted within the top 5 in both the US and UK spawned a surprise international hit single with the radio edit of the title track.

Alongside Autobahn, Kraftwerk are well known in the UK for singles such as Showroom Dummies, Tour de France and The Robots, alongside the chart-topping hits Computer Love and The Model.

Kraftwerk will be bringing their special 3-D live show to bluedot, marking the first time the band have performed the immersive gig at a UK festival headline slot. The show ran for a limited time in sold-out UK theatres last year, as well as at iconic venues such as the Bilbao Guggenheim, New York’s Museum of Modern Art and London’s Tate Modern Turbine Hall. The shows received rave reviews, with The Guardian giving the Liverpool date of the tour five stars out of five. 3-D The Catalogue, the live album recorded at various shows on the tour, was nominated for two Grammy Awards in 2018, taking home one.

Don’t miss Kraftwerk performing their Kraftwerk 3-D show at bluedot Festival next summer.
