Feature: What we learned from Lovebox 2019

The festival took over West London's Gunnersbury Park last weekend.

Acton Town was graced by glorious sunshine and a fleet of fashionistas as Lovebox Festival was hosted at Gunnersbury Park over the 12 -13th of July 2019. With a line up consisting of Chance The Rapper, Solange, Giggs, J Hus, 2 Chainz, Cypress Hill and a bucket load more straight fire acts. West London was in for one groovy weekend, and that’s what it got.

Friday – SOLANGE knows!

Kicking off the Friday on the main stage was Tiffany Calver, offering up some of the freshest tracks mixed together seamlessly whilst hype-man MR IAMNEXT got the Lovebox crowd going off.

With such huge energy early on, there was only one man for the job to maintain the chaos on the i-D Presents stage, and that, was slowthai. The doorman let him in and showed what really is great about Britain to the Lovebox faithful, performing tracks from his debut album released earlier this year.

Loyle Carner was swimming in sunshine during his evening set, playing tracks from Yesterday’s Gone and his newest release Not Waving, But Drowning. Carner was joined by Rebel Kleff, Jordan Rakei and more as he made everyone in Gunnersbury Park feel like part of the team.

KAYTRANADA, Guy Gerber, SOLOMUN and FISHER were providing the bass lines throughout the night across the Noisey and UNLEASH stages, allowing shufflers to do their thing into the wee hours.

Bringing a more subtle look to the proceedings, 2 CHAINZ introduced himself to the crowd in a big way with a neon green and yellow Slazenger poncho, easily winning the best-dressed man award. The Atlanta rapper performed an unprecedented repertoire of classic features and original tracks that happily pleased even the most eclectic in taste.

Next up was J Hus, who bought his style and smooth flow to the i-D Presents stage. He came in a black Benz and left in a white one.

Headlining was the incredible Solange. The Houston native had the crowd in awe as she performed hits such as Cranes in the Sky and Don’t Touch My Hair, whilst describing how proud she was of the diversity of the crowd.

If that wasn’t your thing, the alternative was something a bit more insane in the membrane… Cypress Hill performed their second studio album Black Sunday in its entirety and the Noisey stage was left stunned. With studio-quality vocals and a tight percussion ensemble, it was a recipe for success and closed the Friday night perfectly.

Saturday – Take a ‘chance’ on me

Chance the Rapper headlined the Saturday and took more of a Biblical approach to the festival. Donning a church themed stage and a full chorus, Chance performed tracks from his short but stacked discography and also showed love to his friends DJ Khaled and Justin Bieber, as the crowd boogied along to I’m The One.

Also performing on the i-D presents stage throughout the day was Giggs, Four Tet, Brockhampton (who were a UK Festival Exclusive) and LIZZO, who shone with personality and charisma. She serenaded the West London park with her powerful vocals and sang hits such as Boys, Jerome, Juice alongside more bangers from her latest album Cuz I Love You.

The Noisey stage boasted an incredible line up for the Saturday which included Action Bronson, Children of Zeus, Ross From Friends and Tion Wayne. Who all bought a little something special to the day, as their sets followed each other seamlessly. A perfectly curated running order for the Lovebox Faithful.

With another year absolutely smashed out the park which provided more than a few memorable performances from the likes of slowthai, Lizzo, Cypress Hill and more, for a lot of Londoners, summer has just peaked and the Lovebox hangover looks like it’s going to last for a while.
