What we learned from watching M Huncho live
London trap-wave artist M Huncho performed his highly-anticipated first ever headline tour.
Islington’s o2 Academy was the final of three stops, following performances in both Manchester and Birmingham for the scenes’ rising masked star, M Huncho. The project itself, 48 Hours, an 8-track EP filled with piercing lyricism and melody, was the first work from Huncho to enter the UK Album Top 100 Charts, despite being created, start to finish, in a two-day studio session. It received rave reviews from the UK industry and further afield, as a new sound defined by Huncho began to infiltrate the scene.
M Huncho’s innovative genre encapsulates the scene and it’s fans. The progress made by him and his team has been undeniable to even those at the fringes. Following the success of his most recent project, we can only expect bigger and better things from the Huncho camp in the next year or two.
With that in mind, here’s what we learnt from his live show:

His fans have been listening for a minute
Less than two years deep in the game, M Huncho’s rise to prominence is only beginning. With a charting EP, hosting only one feature, it’s clear his definitive sounds and flows have triggered the attention of a fan-base which have been with him from day one with the release of his first online freestyles. This was evident from the screaming reception he received following the drop of some of his earlier tunes, including his infamous Mad About Bars freestyle.
He’s got a lot of friends…
Huncho was joined onstage by the surprise arrival of 23, and his track Ain’t Bothered, before the pair were joined by an increasingly growing entourage, all of whom remaining there throughout the night. The crowd were also blessed with the arrival of several guests, from Headie 1, K Trap and more. Though a notably popular activity amongst the UK urban scene, perhaps somewhat surprising for a rapper who’s face has never been seen.
His sound is a refreshing one
The response given by the fully packed out venue was second to none as Huncho broke out into an a capella rendition of the lead single Elevation’s first verse. He was matched word for word before the room’s attention was arrested with his alleviating yet commanding demeanor. A sound he himself describes as ‘Tarpwave’, somewhere in between an R&B-esque ballad and gritty-raw trap music, infused with distorted vocals. It’s definitely a catch.
