The Naked and Famous share their essential tracks with us

New Zealand indie rock band The Naked and Famous are back on UK soil next year, with dates in Edinburgh, Manchester and London – and we can’t wait.

What makes the news of their return even better is the fact that the band also released their third album Simple Forms last Friday. The record, released via their Somewhat Damaged label in conjunction with Kobalt Label Services came together in the home studio of guitarist/vocalist/producer Thom Powers amidst the break-up with fellow band member Alisa Xayalith. Having been together eight years — nearly the entirety of the band’s career — the split-up also threatened to cause the end of The Naked and Famous altogether.

It’s safe to say that the journey to bring Simple Forms to their fans has been something of a cathartic one, so we asked Thom Powers to offer up some of the tracks that the band are currently playing as essential listening.

The Chain Gang Of 1974 – I Still Wonder

In between finishing Simple Forms II stil helped my (long-suffering) friend Kamtin produce and co-write the next album from The Chain Gang Of 1974. It’s coming out next year and features kicks, snares and cymbals attacked by our own Jesse Wood and even perhaps a Feat. Alisa Xayalith… so this one’s really been a family affair. Kamtin actually helped us finish Laid Low.

Phantogram – You Don’t Get Me High Anymore

I’m late to the party here, but these guys are excellent. I don’t know why we haven’t toured with them… in fact, i’m going to email my MGMT right now – so watch this space.

Alice Glass – Stillbirth

We’re impatiently anticipating her album. This is the most excellent thing she has ever done in my opinion.

The Japanese House – Clean

I was lucky enough to meet Amber before she began releasing music under the name The Japanese House. I think she may be my favorite new artists of 2016.

School of Seven Bells – Open Your Eyes

Frankly, it is a challenge to listen to this album without crying.

Frightened Rabbit – Death Dream

A long standing influence on TNAF that began back in 2008. This song is my head.

So Below – Drift

A long standing friend of TNAF’s, her debut EP is out now. Please check it out.

Chairlift – Crying in Public

Put simply, the story of my life.

Moderat – Reminder

Effortlessly inter-splicing dance music and traditional song-writing, this team are a constant reference point when we’rerecording. Most recently heading an email thread, subject matter, “clicks, clacks, rims and shclacks”.

Julien Baker – Sprained Ankle

2.25. All songs ought to be this precise and painful wherever possible.
