New Music Friday: Ed Sheeran, Collabro and more

It’s our favourite time of the week – New Music Friday is the new release fix you need to get your weekend started. This week we’ll be listening to Ed Sheeran, Callabro, Sleaford Mods and more.

What’s even better about New Music Friday is that you can also listen to a lot of the new music live. We’ve also found a few artists who’ve got new records out and are about to take them on tour. Double win!

Ed Sheeran – ÷ (Divide)

Now something of a British institution, Ed Sheeran has rapidly risen from his singer-songwriter roots (remember The A Team, through 2014’s massive x (Multiply) to this, his undoubted stratospheric success ÷ (Divide). With the record’s lead singles already mainstays at the top of the charts, this will be one of (if not the) biggest release of 2017. He’s touring too, with all tickets understandably sold out. Keep an eye on him here in case there’s any further news. Grab the record here.

Collabro – Home

Former Britain’s Got Talent winners, and now fully fledged classical entertainment, Callabro release their third studio album today, following the successful debut Stars and 2015’s follow-up, Act Two. The record features the quartet’s distinctive versions of tracks from stage and screen, including the likes of Les Miserables and Wicked. They’ll also be hitting the road towards the end of the year, with remaining tickets available here. Grab the record here.

Sleaford Mods – English Tapas

Socially charged Nottingham duo Sleaford Mods have made a name for themselves with their abrasive response to austerity Britain, delivered through a thick East Midlands accent. English Tapas is their tenth (yes, tenth) studio album to date, having dropped their debut back in 2007 and worked relentlessly since. Their straightforward attitude and sound has drawn in legions of fans, and will now see them headline London’s O2 Academy Brixton as part of their UK tour. Tickets are on sale now here. Grab the record here.

Grandaddy – Last Place

20 years since the release of their debut Under The Western Freeway, and over a decade since their last full-length Just Like The Fambly Cat, Californian indie-rockers Grandaddy return with their first new album since reforming back in 2012. Having previously expressed concern about the pressure of a new album, vocalist Jason Lytle once again seems raring to go. There’s no full tour just yet, but the band have been confirmed to appear at Latitude Festival later this year. Grab the record here.

Minus The Bear – Voids

Five years since their last album (2012’s Infinity Overhead), influential Seattle outfit Minus The Bear have dropped Voids, a collection of ten tracks and their first without drummer Erin Tate. The band aren’t strangers to the UK, and will be back over here for an extensive run in June. Tickets just went on sale through our friends at TicketWeb. Grab the record here.

Temples – Volcano

Blending prog with their own take on indie-rock, Temples have released their follow-up to their UK Top 10 record Sun Structures. Volcano features twelve new tracks, bookended by lead singles Certainty and the expansive Strange But Not Forgotten. The release comes as they gear up for their UK tour later this month. Remaining tickets are available here. Grab the record here.

Methyl Ethel – Everything Is Forgotten

Hailing from Perth, Australia, Methyl Ethel are following up their Oh Inhuman Spectacle debut with Everything Is Forgotten. The record’s lead singles present the band’s unusual juxtaposition of dense and light, generated by the deep hums and ethereal vocals. Their sound is summarised by their surreal Facebook description, “poltergeist infomercials between your ‘sleepisodes’.” They follow up the release with a trip over to the UK for an appearance at Field Day. Grab the record here.

Tim Kasher – No Resolution

Coming to prominence as the vocalist for indie-rock groups Cursive and The Good Life, Tim Kasher ventured into the world of solo work in 2010. His predominantly self-reflective lyrics have focussed around the struggles of growing up, and his dissociation with youth culture. No Resolution is his ominously titled fourth solo record, following 2013’s Adult Film. He’ll be reaching the UK in support of the record later this month, with tickets for his Glasgow date available here.

Basement – Promise Everything (Deluxe Edition)

Basement have re-released last year’s comeback album Promise Everything following their deal with alternative label Fueled By Ramen. It features the original ten tracks, including singles Aquasun and the record’s title-track, plus two new songs and some acoustic renditions. It arrives as the band headline shows across the UK, and as they gear up to play at Download Festival.
