The winner is no surprised to fully-fledged Springsteen fans and is the one song that gives you all the chills and all the feels, especially when performed live. Here’s your top five…
5. The River
Oh yeah, it had to be in there! The title track of his 1980 album The River. The track and the album are also the basis of his current tour that will soon be coming to the UK. It originally started out as a documentary for American TV channel HBO titled ‘The Ties That Bind’ along with a special box set including rare take outs and a live DVD. Judging from the setlists so far and from the title of the tour, we can expect to hear The River in its entirety for The Boss’ shows in May and June.
4. Dancing In The Dark
Cue Courtney Cox! Probably the least known fact about Courtney Cox is that she starred in Springsteen’s video for his 1984 hit Dancing In The Dark from the album Born In The USA. In the video, Cox is asked to join Springsteen on stage for a little dance. Springsteen has carried on that tradition with a dance session at every show with one of the fans in the very front rows – he even danced with a 89-year-old grandmother in Toronto just two weeks ago.
3. Jungleland
Another Born To Run track, Jungleland is almost 10-minutes long and tells the tale of love in the midst of gang violence. Most fans love this track because it features one of the late Clarence Clemons most recognisable solo performances on the saxophone. His nephew Jake Clemons took over the very special role of Clarence after 2011 and has since had a place in the heart of many Springsteen fans.
2. Born To Run
People often wonder why Springsteen fans call each other Tramps. The answer is simple: it’s all in the lyrics. The lyrics of Born To Run that is. The iconic up-tempo song is the title track of Springsteen’s 1975 album. The line ‘Because, tramps like us, baby, we were born to run’ is the true motto of all things Springsteen. The song is the essential foundation of what Bruce Springsteen is about, the stories his songs tell and the sound that makes him what he is today.
1. Thunder Road
The song was initially released on Springsteen’s 1975 album Born To Run and is still one of fans’ most beloved live tracks. Live, the track is performed by just Springsteen on stage with his guitar and his harmonica – in front of tens of thousands of people. It’s a song that truly requires a sing-along and will give you goosebumps everywhere. For one, because the melody of the song and Springsteen’s voice are like nothing else in fully packed stadium. But also, because the lyrics, as haunting as they are to begin with, just seem to echo off the walls and create a beautifully eerie atmosphere.
