Robert Plant CBE, the legendary Led Zeppelin frontman and lyricist, has been announced to headline the second day of The Bath Festival finale weekend. He’ll appear with his Sensational Space Shifters to culminate the 17-day multi arts event which is celebrating its 70th anniversary next year.

Plant is a fitting choice to end The Bath Festival because he’ll be returning almost 50 years after Led Zeppelin performed at the Bath Blues Festival, which was also held at Bath Recreation Ground. That was in 1969 and it was the same year Led Zeppelin released their eponymous debut album as well as a few of their defining songs including Whole Lotta Love, Ramble On and Good Times Bad Times. With their unique heavy guitar-driven sound, the band went on to record a slew of incredible music in the ’70s including 1971’s signature power ballad Stairway to Heaven.

Ranked by Rolling Stone magazine as one of the greatest singers of all time, Plant embarked on a solo career in the ’80s. Not only has he received numerous Grammy Award nominations, but he’s also collaborated with artists like Alison Krauss. In 2009, he won the Outstanding Contribution to Music prize at the Q Awards.

Following on from 2014’s Lullaby and… the Ceaseless Roar, Plant released his 11th solo studio album, Carry Fire, in October and is getting ready to promote it with a world tour in early 2018. You can hear his thunderous song Bones of Saints below. The new album also contains Plant’s cover of Ersel Hickey’s Bluebirds Over the Mountain, on which he collaborates with Chrissie Hynde.

The Bath Festival runs from 11 – 27 May 2018. Last week one of the biggest bands of the ’80s, pop duo Tears for Fears, confirmed they will return to their hometown on Saturday 26 May 2018 to be part of the celebration. Alison Moyet will join them as a special guest.

“Hot on the heels of our exciting news about Tears for Fears and Alison Moyet, we’re thrilled to announce that Robert Plant will headline on the second day finale weekend, completing a great circle in rock history 50 years on,” said Ian Stockley, Chief Executive of Bath Festivals. “This important weekend will have something for all the family, rounding off the 17 days of next year’s festival with three outdoor stages and a number of hugely exciting acts across the two days, and it’s terrific that Robert will be there to perform for us.”
