At the end of March and into early April, rising genre-mashers Black Futures are crossing England for four headline shows, culminating with a performance at London’s Lexington on 2 April 2019.

Having recently dropped their latest track Me.TV – featuring Primal Scream’s Bobby Gillespie – and launched their community volunteering programme, they are now looking to welcome a new wave of fans into their ever-growing family.

“Welcome to the ‘Make Weird & Live Free Tour’” the pair say enthusiastically of their forthcoming live shows. “We’re on a mission to spread as much joy, positive vibes and cathartic abandon to our club members via the magic of rock and roll, synths and profanity. ALL ABOARD!!!”

Ahead of the tour, we asked Black Futures for the songs that will be soundtracking their time on the road.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds – Into My Arms
“It’s early morning and your stepping into the tour van with fresh bruises from last night’s show. The nostalgic ache of melancholy drifts over you as the landscape starts to change through the window. You and your gang of comrades voyaging purposefully into the unknown. This is the song we’re listening to and we’re overwhelmed by beauty.”

Mulatu Astatke – Yegelle Tezeta
“The energy of the day is starting to galvanise. Chat turns to last night’s antics and the characters we met. Anticipation is building for the promise of today’s expedition. The unknown, the exotic, chaos, danger, camaraderie. This tune brings intrigue to the stories in your head. It evokes tales from any landscape or befuddled passer by. Psychedelic, mesmeric, other worldly vibes from the King of Ethiopian Vibraphone.”

The Fall – Totally Wired
“Mania has set in as tonight’s show pulls into focus. We’re on the hype train. Meditating intensely on the upcoming mayhem. This track binds us all with our madness in tow. I love the wiry thump of this song. It’s so singular in its intent. ‘My heart and I agree!’”

The Bronx – Knifeman
“We’re on the outskirts of an unfamiliar city edging closer to the venue and today’s family. This is an anthem for outsiders, existing in spite of the norm. Originals with a disregard for conformity and boundless energy for existence. ‘I want to be original, I want to be surrounded by art!’ It unifies us and bathes us in punk rock glory as we scream our way to soundcheck.”

Gesaffelstein – Pursuit
“Show time! We need a track to distil our energy and adrenaline into a shot of pure joy and abandon. This track is so intense… It’s surgical sonic precision and violent intensity has no mercy! You must follow it into battle… ‘Welcome to the Black Futures Expedition Club’”
