“None of my friends are OK” goes the refrain on Liz Lawrence’s new single None Of My Friends. The tune is an ode to her pals, both online and in real life, who all seem to be in the midst of some form of emotional crisis. “I’m not saying I’m any better than that”, comments Lawrence, “I’m just laughing at how absurd we all are”.

The bass-driven track is amusing in tone and is the latest single from the musician’s forthcoming new album, Pity Party, due for release on 24 October 2019.

The third single from the album that Lawrence has released so far, None Of My Friends, follows the Slacker rock Navigator and the anthemic Usp.

Pity Party is the songwriter’s second LP, following on from her 2013 debut Bedroom Hero, a collection of 12 folk-pop songs that Lawrence wrote and recorded as a teen.

The new LP marks a shift in both Lawrence’s musical ability and progression as a songwriter, showcasing a greater level of self-awareness that the six years between the albums has brought her.

The process of becoming more self-aware was hurried along by Liz being chewed up and spat out of the major label machine shortly before her debut record’s release. The lack of control that Lawrence endured during that time would spur the musician on to take the reins of her art.

After the release of her debut, Lawrence spent a short amount of time in the well-loved electro-pop duo Cash + David, before becoming a touring member of Bombay Bicycle Club.

Whilst travelling the world with Bombay, the musician taught herself how to produce and eventually, after regaining her confidence, began releasing a handful of stand-alone self-produced singles last year.

The origins of her new record came in 2018 when, after moving house a lot, Liz found herself staying at a friend’s semi-renovated home in Cornwall all by herself. The feeling of scared isolation kickstarted the creative process and she ended up writing six of the new LP’s songs in five days.

Ahead of the release of the album this October, Liz announced she’d perform a headline show at SET, London on the 29 October, with tickets flying out.

The musician will rejoin the recently reunited Bombay Bicycle Club on their UK tour this winter, this time as support, before heading out on a handful of headline dates in February.
