South African export Nakhane walks a fine line between sensual and powerful. On his second album and first to reach into international markets, You Will Not Die, he explores his turbulent relationship with sexuality and religion. Out and unquestionably proud, Nakhane offers an uncensored insight into his deeply personal struggles growing up as a gay man in the church.
The resulting art is nothing short of breathtaking. His lyrical candour is filled with personal liberation. Not only inspiring, You Will Not Die is vital – a clear light to those facing similar battles. Through his very distinctive style Nakhane celebrates self-expression and individualism.
With a voice that nods to Anohni and a sound that reimagines the stripped back electronics of Perfume Genius, Nakhane dares to push musical boundaries.
Accordingly his live show is a whirlwind of atmosphere and emotion. At a recent headline show at London’s Hoxton Square Bar and Kitchen, he glided from hearty electronic beats to a stripped back vocal powerhouse performance with ease. Dressed in part in leather fetish gear, it was his personality that took centre stage, his light-hearted openness somehow elevating his densely personal lyrics.
His music and performance genuinely speaks to his fans. Yet perhaps more importantly there’s a universal lesson about identity, liberation, and the beauty in the self, and it sounds truly excellent. Also check him out in the feature film Inxeba (The Wound), for which he’s celebrated serious acclaim.
Nakhane embraces his love of all things disco, yet retains his darker edge on Clairvoyant.
He delves into his troubled relationship between sexuality and religion on the haunting Presbyteria.
Here he delivers the stunning beautiful and equally heartbreaking You Will Not Die title track live.
