Open up your streaming service of choice, type Dermot Kennedy into the search bar, and prepare to be hit in the chest…hard. The Irish singer-songwriter has been making waves in recent years with his affecting anthems that are destined to be sung loudly in large rooms filled with thousands of other humans.
From busking on the streets of Dublin to selling-out shows in America, the last couple of years have been a rollercoaster ride for Kennedy. Funding his initial recordings by performing on the world-famous Grafton Street, the young singer hit a stroke of luck when one of his initial tracks, After Rain, was picked up by Spotify’s Discovered Weekly playlist. The pop-star in waiting used his royalties to invest in himself, funding tours and recording more music all before inking a deal with any record company.
Kennedy followed up the single with his debut EP Doves & Ravens in 2017. The four-track release signalled the move into a more pop-orientated sound, with Kennedy collaborating with songwriter Charlie Hugall (Ed Sheeran, Florence + The Machine). Shortly after the release, the truly global artist hit the road selling out shows in Dublin, London, Berlin, Los Angeles and New York.
The singer’s latest release is the Zane Lowe endorsed track Power Over Me. Filled to the brim with soul, the release follows Kennedy’s appearance on NPR’s Tiny Desk series and coincides with his world tour. The tour, his biggest to date, saw the singer sell-out two nights at London’s Electric Brixton.
With a combined total of over 300 million streams so far, and a new UK tour in the diary for May 2019 (including a stop at the world famous O2 Academy Brixton) and a debut album in the works, it looks like a very exciting future to be Dermot Kennedy.
The immensely powerful Power Over Me.
