New Music: The Ninth Wave at The Great Escape Festival

The rising duo chat about their sound, playing live, their new EP and more.

It’s no surprise that critics have found it difficult to settle on a description for Scottish duo The Ninth Wave. Their sound, brilliantly presented on this year’s Infancy Part 1 EP, pulls from various corners of the musical spectrum, inviting goth-inspired post-punk, electro-indie, and doom comparisons.

“My favourite one that’s been said is post-punk noir,” Millie Kidd says when chatting to Ticketmaster New Music backstage at The Great Escape Festival earlier this summer.

She’s joined by Hadyn Park-Patterson, long-time friend and musical collaborator. On stage, both now act as enigmatic front-people, their bodies writhing to the atypical dance of their music.

Kidd joined the band following an invite from Park-Patterson, taking up guitar and bass, having already learned the piano and drums. At this point, The Ninth Wave had existed in some form for a while. Kidd’s live debut was at Glasgow’s iconic King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut, a stepping stone for many of the countries biggest artists.

Since then, The Ninth Wave have grown exponentially in status. They joined fellow Scots Chvrches at their huge SSE Hydro show, and earlier this year headed over to the United States for an appearance at the international new music showcase, South By South West.

2019 has also seen them unleash their Infancy Part 1 EP, which alongside the forthcoming part 2 will form their debut full-length, Infancy.

With a bright future ahead of them and speaking at The Great Escape Festival, Millie Kidd and Haydn Park Patterson look back at their biggest shows to date, and forward at their debut album release. Watch the full interview above.
