The previously announced Tom Hiddleston will be joined by two of the country’s most exciting young actors, Zawe Ashton and Charlie Cox, in the West End production of Harold Pinter’s Betrayal.

Directed by Jamie Lloyd, the production will run at the Harold Pinter Theatre for 12 weeks only from 5 March 2019, and marks the conclusion of the Pinter at the Pinter season.

“I’m so thrilled to be part of the journey into the heart of one of Harold Pinter’s most personal pieces of work,” Ashton, star of TV’s Fresh Meat and Not Safe For Work says. “As a longtime collaborator of Jamie Lloyd, it’s so exciting to be rounding off such an epic season of Pinter’s work.”

Ashton, who like Pinter was born in Hackney, also starred in The Jamie Lloyd Company production of The Maids at Trafalgar Studios, as well as the title role in Lloyd’s Salomé. She’ll take on the role of Emma in Betrayal.

Cox will star as Jerry. His acting credits include the leading role in Daredevil, Tristan Thorn in Stardust and Hellyer Jones in the award-winning The Theory of Everything. Cox has appeared on stage in the likes of Lloyd’s The Lover & The Collection in 2008, and the title role in The Prince of Hamburg.

“I am so excited to be returning to the West End and, indeed, the Harold Pinter Theatre after over ten years, and to be collaborating once again with the brilliant Jamie Lloyd,” Cox enthuses. “It feels particularly fitting and special to be working with Jamie on another Pinter play, as our production of The Lover and The Collection in 2008 was amongst the last projects that Harold himself was personally involved with.”

Betrayal is considered one of Harold Pinter’s greatest pieces of work. The highly emotive, humorous and poetic play charts a compelling seven-year romance, captured in reverse chronological order. The play was first produced in 1978 by the National Theatre and featured Pinter at the Pinter company members Penelope Wilton and Michael Gambon.

Hiddleston returns to the London stage to play the role of Robert. One of the most recognisable actors in the world, Hiddleston is known for his on-stage roles in theatre productions such as Hamlet, Coriolanus and Othello and for his film credits including Avengers: Infinity War, Kong: Skull Island and War Horse.

Talking about the play, Hiddleston said, “Betrayal is a masterpiece. Jamie Lloyd’s Pinter at the Pinter season is terrific and I am so pleased that he’s asked me to be part of it.”

Widely regarded as one of the finest playwrights of all time, Harold Pinter wrote 30 plays throughout his career including The Room, The Birthday Party, The Caretaker and The Homecoming and in 2005 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. Born in Hackney in 1930, he lived with Antonia Fraser until his death on Christmas Eve in 2008.

Betrayal opens on 5 March 2019, running for 12 weeks only.
