Celebrate 30 years of The Phantom of the Opera in the West End
On Monday 10 October, the West End production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s iconic musical will celebrated its 30th anniversary with a very special gala performance.
In aid of The Music in Secondary Schools Trust, the special performance on saw the current cast of The Phantom of the Opera joined onstage by members of the original company, along with other VIPs, in what promises to be a spectacular finale.
The show, produced by Cameron Mackintosh and The Really Useful Theatre Company Limited, opened at Her Majesty’s Theatre on 9 October 1986 starring Michael Crawford as The Phantom and Sarah Brightman as Christine.
It tells the story of ingénue Christine Daae and the mysterious Phantom, who has secretly been teaching her to sing and wants to propel her to super-stardom onstage at Paris’ magnificent Opera House.
The Olivier and Tony Award-winning musical features iconic songs such as The Music of the Night, Wishing You Were Somewhere Here Again, All I Ask of You and the titular anthem, The Phantom of the Opera.
Back in 2006, it became the longest running show in Broadway history, surpassing the previous record holder, Cats; in January 2013 the show celebrated an amazing 25 years on Broadway. In 2011, the West End production celebrating its 25 years with a spectacular staging at London’s Royal Albert Hall, which that was broadcast live to cinemas around the world.
The current cast in London includes Ben Forster as The Phantom, Celinde Schoenmaker as Christine and Nadim Naaman as Raoul.
