Chess, written in 1984 by ABBA songwriters Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaus, as well as theatre veteran Tim Rice, will be returning to the West End for its first major revival in over 30 years.

The show tells a story of love and political intrigue, set against the backdrop of the Cold War as the Russian and American superpowers try to manipulate their entrants in an international chess championship.

Things are complicated further by the arrival of a Hungarian refugee.

Including hit songs and music such as I Know Him So Well and One Night In Bangkok, the new West End production features the English National Opera’s award-winning Orchestra and Chorus.

The production will be directed by Laurence Connor, who has also worked on School of Rock and Miss Saigon on Broadway and in the West End. He’s also been involved in Les Misérables and the international Jesus Christ Superstar tour.

Chess will be coming to the London Coliseum for a limited run from the 26 April until the 2 June 2018.

The original production, which starred Elaine Paige, ran in 1986 at the Prince Edward Theatre.

Casting for the revival of the legendary musical is yet to be announced.
