The cast of Martin Crimp’s forthcoming new adaption of Edmond Rostand’s Cyrano De Bergerac, starring James McAvoy, reveal more about the forthcoming West End production in the video above.
As well as McAvoy, the cast features Michele Austin as Ragueneau, Adam Best as Le Bret, Sam Black as Armand/Priest, Nari Blair-Mangat as Valvert, Philip Cairns as Referee, Tom Edden as De Guiche, Eben Figueiredo as Christian, Chris Fung as Usher, Adrian Der Gregorian as Montfleury, Carla Harrison-Hodge as Denise/Medic, Seun Shote as Theatre Owner, Kiruna Stamell as Marie-Louise, Nima Taleghani as Ligniere and Anita-Joy Uwajeh as Roxane.
Vaneeka Dadhria, Mika Johnson and Brinsley Terence are also set to appear in the production.
The Jamie Lloyd directed play opens at London’s Playhouse Theatre on Wednesday 29 November 2019, running until Saturday 29 February 2020.
Its synopsis reads: Fierce with a pen and notorious in combat, Cyrano almost has it all – if only he could win the heart of his true love. There’s just one big problem: he has a nose as huge as his heart. Will a society engulfed by narcissism get the better of De Bergerac – or can his mastery of language set Roxane’s world alight?
Glasgow-born James McAvoy stars in the play’s title role. The actor is perhaps best known for his performances as X-Men founder Charles Xavier in the hugely popular superhero movie franchise, a role he has portrayed in the films X-Men: First Class, X-Men: Days Of Future Past, X-Men Apocalypse, Deadpool 2 and Dark Pheonix.
McAvoy’s film credits also include appearances in The Last King Of Scotland, Glass, It Chapter Two and Atonement, with his performance in the latter earning him a Golden Globe nomination in 2008.
His West End credits include Three Days of Rain, Macbeth and The Ruling Class.
First premiering in 1897, Cyrano De Bergerac is considered one of Rostand’s finest works and is responsible for introducing the word “panache” into the English language.
In 1990 the play was adapted into a French-language film, earning lead actor Gérard Depardieu an Academy Award nomination for his performance in the title role.
