Everybody’s Talking About Jamie extends West End run

The hit musical will also be made into a major new film.

Everybody’s Talking About Jamie is once again extended its run at London’s Apollo Theatre.

The musical senstation, directed by Jonathan Butterell and written by Dan Gillespie Sells and Tom MacRae, is now booking until April 2019.

The news comes as producers confirm that Everybody’s Talking About Jamie will be made into a film by Warp Films, the team behind the likes of This Is England, Ghost Stories and The Last Panthers. The film will celebrate the same creative team as the musical, directed by Butterell, written by MacRae with music by Dan Gillespie Sells.

“All I originally wanted was to go to my school prom in a dress,” Jamie Campbell, the inspiration behind the story, beams. “Then Firecracker made the documentary. My story then inspired a West End musical. Now it’s a film! It’s incredible. Even I couldn’t have dreamed it.”

Filming is expected to being in spring 2019.

The stage production of Everybody’s Talking About Jamie opened at the Sheffield Crucible in 2017 to critical acclaim, before transferring to London’s West End. Alongside rave reviews, the production won the UK Theatre Award for Best Musical Production, and Best Performance in a Musical for lead actor John McCrea. It has since been nominated for five coveted Olivier Awards, as well as winning three WhatsOnStage Awards.

The musical also celebrated the Attitude Culture Award 2017, as well as the Best Composer Award for Dan Gillespie-Sells, who rose to fame as the frontman of The Feeling.

Lead John McCrea is joined by Josie Walker, Tamsin Carroll, the newly added Shobna Gulati, Lucie Shorthouse, Phil Nichol and more on stage.

Jamie New is sixteen and lives on a council estate in Sheffield. Jamie doesn͛t quite fit in. Jamie is terrified about the future. He is going to be a sensation.

Supported by his brilliant loving mum and surrounded by his friends, Jamie overcomes prejudice, beats the bullies and steps out of the darkness, into the spotlight.

The musical production is based on the true story of Jamie Campbell and his mother Margaret, as told in the documentary film Jamie: Drag Queen at 16. This inspired director Jonathan Butterell, who used the story as a basis for Everybody’s Talking About Jamie.
