Review: Five things we loved about Elf the Musical

Christmas has come early thanks to Elf the Musical; now showing at London’s Dominion Theatre until 2 January.

With Kimberley Walsh and Ben Forster starring in the new West End production, we couldn’t resist rushing down to catch one of the preview performances.

Here are five things we loved about Elf the Musical

1. Deb (Walter Hobbs’ PA)

Played by the infectious Jennie Dale (Singin’ In The Rain, Mamma Mia!, Sister Act), Deb is the PA to Walter Hobbs and Buddy’s eventual partner in crime. After arriving in New York to find his real dad, and in time for Christmas, Deb is the source of many of the show’s funniest moments.

2. Kimberly Walsh as Jovie

The former Girls Aloud starlet makes a welcome return to the West End in Elf the Musical and she’s a breath of fresh air to the production. Despite her character’s stubbornness to sing, when she does eventually belt out a tune, it’s truly beautiful.

3. The fake snow

We’re not going to ruin the surprise completely, but the point at which soft faux snow falls from the Dominion Theatre rafters, covers the stalls and surprises theatre goers is the most Christmassy moment of the whole show.

4. Ben Forster as Buddy

His lead role as Buddy means Ben rarely leaves the stage. There’s a genuine excitement that oozes from the Sunderland star’s pores as he fills the festive stage with Christmas cheer.

5. The finale

As everything comes to a triumphant close in the final scenes, sheer jubilation soars through the theatre. Managing to totally capture the excitement of Christmas in a musical finale has been made easy by Morgan Young, Stuart Morley and team of creatives behind Elf the Musical.

ELF will show at The Dominion Theatre, London between 24 October 2015 – 2 January 2016, book now at Ticketmaster.co.uk.
