Michael Ball, who received an Olivier Award during the show’s original West End run for his portrayal of Edna Turnblad, will be reprising the role for this limited season.

They will be joined by Marish Wallace, who received rave reviews for her performances in Dreamgirls and recently finished her run in the original West End cast of Waitress. Wallace will star as Motormouth in the forthcoming production.

British comedian Paul Merton will be making his West End musical debut in the show, starring as Edna’s husband Wilbur.

News: The full cast has been revealed for Hairspray’s return to the West End

Based on John Waters 1998 hit film of the same name, Hairspray takes place in early ’60s Baltimore and tells the story of Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair and big dreams. Audiences follow Tracy’s journey as she tries to make it onto the local TV dance show to win the attention of teen heartthrob Link Larkin, whilst bringing everyone together whatever their colour, size or hairdo.

The original West End production of Hairspray ran for nearly 1,000 shows between 2007 and 2010 at the Shaftesbury Theatre. The musical received a record-breaking 13 Oliver Award nominations during its run, taking home the award for Best New Musical, and earning Michael Ball and Leanne Jones the awards for Best Actor and Best Actress in a musical.

The new production sees the return of the musical’s original creative team of director Jack O’Brien and choreographer Jerry Mitchell and will feature the return of the feel-good songs Good Morning Baltimore, You Can’t Stop the Beat and Big Blonde and Beautiful.

Joyous, fabulous and jam-packed with fun, the uplifting musical Hairspray will return to London’s West End for 10 weeks only.

Hairspray will open at the London Coliseum on Thursday 22 April 2021.

Tickets to see Hairspray will be available from 10:00 on Monday 27 July 2020 through Ticketmaster.co.uk
