“The greatest musical from the golden age of theatre”, The King and I, will be returning to the West End for a run at the London Palladium in the Spring of next year.

The King and I sees the original New York Tony Award winning performances cross the Atlantic.

The critically acclaimed version of the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic will bring members of the Broadway cast to London. Kelli O’Hara will reprise her Tony Award winning performance joined by Tony and Oscar nominee Ken Watanabe.

Director Bartlett Sher (Oslo) will bring together the original creative team, including Tony Award winner for Best Costume Catherine Zuber, set designer Michael Yeargan, lighting designer Donald Holder, and sound designer Scott Lehrer.

Christopher Gattelli will handle choreography based on the original by Jerome Robbins.

Set in 1860’s Bangkok, the musical tells the story of the unconventional and tempestuous relationship that develops between the King of Siam and Anna Leonowens, a British schoolteacher whom the modernist King, in an imperialistic world, brings to Siam to teach his many wives and children.

Additional characters include Burmese slave and one of the King’s wives Tuptim, and Lady Thiang, the King’s chief wife.

The West End revival will as ever feature hit songs such as Whistle a Happy Tune, Getting To Know You, and Shall We Dance.

The King and I became an Academy Award winning film in 1956. Watch stars Yul Brynner and Deborah Kerr perform Shall We Dance in the film below:
