The news follows a four-week extension to the play’s run, now booking from 25 January – 13 June 2020 at London’s Wyndham’s Theatre.

Described as Stoppard’s most humane and heartbreaking play to date, Leopoldstadt is set in Vienna in 1900, a vibrant city full of artists and intellectuals enjoying life. A tenth of the population were Jewish, who had fled there in their hundreds of thousands, finding sanctuary in the old Jewish quarter, Leopoldstadt.

The intimate drama tells the story of a family who created a better life for themselves, but would soon re-discover, like many other families over the next 50 years, what it would mean to be Jewish during the first half of the 20th century.

Ultimately, Leopoldstadt is a passionate drama of love, endurance and loss.

The play was written by the internationally renowned award-winning writer Tom Stoppard, whose other plays include Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, The Real Inspector Hound, After Magritte, Jumpers, New Found Land, Dogg’s Hamlet, Travesties, Night and Day, Indian Ink, The Invention of Love, The Coast of Utopia, Rock ‘n’ Roll and, most recently, The Hard Problem.

Leopoldstadt will be directed by Patrick Marber, whose credits include Dealer’s Choice at the National Theatre, Don Juan in Soho at Wyndham’s Theatre and Travesties at the Menier Chocolate Factory, Apollo Theatre and The American Airlines Theater, New York, which earned the director a Tony Award nomination.

Leopoldstadt will run from 25 January – 13 June 2020 at the Wyndham’s Theatre, London.
