Minimasters measure the mischief at The Play that Goes Wrong
Meet our latest Minimaster, Alfie, aged 9. Find out what happened when this budding TV presenter headed to London’s Duchess Theatre to catch The Play that Goes Wrong.
Usually when you go and see a play the cast are hoping nothing goes wrong but in this case they’re hoping the opposite.
The Cornley Polytechnic Theatre Company hope to perform a 1920s murder mystery but their plans go down the drain when everything goes wrong.
On Sunday 31 May, I went to see The Play that Goes Wrong at the Duchess Theatre. My Dad came with me, and I was super-excited about going to my first play in the West End. Even on the outside of the theatre there were lots of mistakes! Normally the play begins when the curtain rises but in this play some of the action starts as the audience are still taking their seats, so expect a few surprises.
The style of the play is quite silly with lots of slapstick comedy. I loved the way it was a play within a play, with each actor playing both the Cornley Polytechnic actor and their character in the murder mystery.
The set is amazing, with a lot of surprising features, especially towards the end, but I won’t spoil it by spilling the beans.
One my favourite parts was when the butler, Perkins, kept getting his lines wrong, sending the dialogue into a never-ending loop. But I think my favorite character was the Inspector – he was constantly angry with the other actors.
There are also some great touches; even part of the programme is a spoof and is the Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society Programme for Murder at Haversham Manor.
All in all, I’d recommend this play to all ages – all the way from 7 to 700 – it’s one of the best shows I’ve ever seen and had me laughing until my sides literally ached. Mischief Theatre certainly lived up to their name.
