Following its highly acclaimed opening season in last summer, Shakespeare’s Rose Theatre has returned to York this summer for a second season, running until 1 September 2019.

The new productions of William Shakespeare’s plays will once again transport audiences to the thrilling, intimate atmosphere of an Elizabethan playhouse.

The second year sees productions of Hamlet, Henry V, The Tempest and Twelfth Night and are guaranteed to be full of breathtaking, spine-tingling, heart-stopping moments. The 13-sided scaffolding theatre offers three tiers of covered seating and an open courtyard for standing “groundlings”.

Outside the theatre, visitors can experience a vibrant, free-to-enter Shakespearean village, offering the finest local food and drinks from oak-framed, reed-thatched buildings, an array of “wagon” entertainment, minstrels and a stunning Elizabethan garden with ornate box-edged beds of cottage flowers, roses and herbs.

For the first time ever, the production will also head south, taking over Oxfordshire’s Blenheim Palace from 8 July – 7 September 2019. Blenheim Palace will host performances of Shakespeare’s popular plays Macbeth, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Richard III and Romeo and Juliet.

The season starts as Shakespeare’s Rose Theatre celebrates three wins at the Visit York Tourism Awards, namely the Innovation in Tourism and Newcomer of the Year awards, as well as Luncbox Theatrical Productions CEO and Shakespeare’s Rose Theatre founder James Cundall MBE receiving the Tourism Champion Award.

Step back in time and experience Shakespeare as it was in his day, with bloody battles, comic mayhem, gruesome murders and grand oratory.
