The stage adaptation of Baz Luhrmann’s Strictly Ballroom is making its way to London’s West End. Strictly Ballroom The Musical surrounds maverick championship ballroom dancer Scott Hastings as he defies all the rules of competition to follow his heart. Teaming up with left-footed partner Fran, the pair succeed at the Pan Pacifics. The musical features classic songs from the film, including Love is in the Air, Perhaps Perhaps Perhaps, and Time After Time.

Drew McOnie has been confirmed as the director and choreographer, having won the coveted Oliver Award in 2017 for In The Heights. Strictly Ballroom is based on the original Australian musical created by Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin, with a book by Luhrmann and Craig Pearce.

The 1992 romantic comedy film was the first in Luhrmann’s Red Curtain Trilogy, which was ultimate completed by Romeo + Juliet and Moulin Rouge.

In the Strictly Ballroom plot, Scott reinvents ballroom dancing, adding his personal touch to the otherwise traditional dance. After losing his partner, he teams up with outsider Fran (played in the film by Tara Morice), who is new to dancing.

Luhrmann’s film adaptation went on to win BATFAs for Best Costume Design, Best Original Film Score, Best Production Design, as well as securing a nomination for Best Film, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Actress and more.

It was also nominated for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy at the Golden Globes.

The stage version promises more from the turbulent world of dance, as well as some iconic hits from a host of internationally acclaimed artists. It promises a thrilling experience for fans of dancing, musicals, and music in general.
